Unfortunately, it is very common for false allegations to be made by one or both parties in a contentious (or soon to be contentious) separation. The allegations can be terrifying, threatening, and will complicate your separation and divorce process. Allegations usually involve one or more of the following:
- Domestic Violence
- Child Abuse
- Court Order Violations
- False claims reported to law enforcement
In these instances there are things that can be done to protect yourself going forward:
- Don't panic
- File a response
- Document everything
- Monitor your behavior
- Gather evidence
- Make a plan and stick to it
If you find yourself in this situation, prepare yourself for future allegations; only one false allegation is quite rare. By following the steps above, remaining level-headed, and delivering a consistent message to the court, you can protect yourself and the true character of your ex or soon-to-be-ex (STBE) will eventually be recognized.
